Becky's Baby Shower

This past November, I was lucky enough to travel across the country to throw a baby shower for my BFF, Becky.  I love her, and love her babies (TWINS!!!)  and can't wait to meet them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was so fun to visit with the Wickstroms, as always.  I was kept busy sewing for the nursery and babies - YAY!!

Family Home Evening Idea

The last time I was at my dad's I asked him if I could steal this old Family Home Evening manual.

Is the picture below, not hilarious? The big floppy bows are so funny, but I guess in the 2011 version of this book they would probably have to have big flowers in all the girls hair! So funny.
Anyhow, I actually tried to put a little thought into FHE on Monday night and used one of the lessons out of it: Accept Yourself As You Are

I had everyone say what their favorite dessert was, their favorite time of year, their hair color, favorite thing to do at church, etc. We talked about how we can all be different and like different things and that's okay.

I read a story in the manual called; Billy Bluebird Learns a Lesson. Billy sees all kinds of other animals and tells his mom he wants to be able to swim like a duck, and to have a bushy tail like a squirrel, and be big like an owl, etc. Billy's mother told him that as long as he wished he was like everyone else he wouldn't be a good bluebird because he wouldn't learn to fly and to sing, because all he would think about was what everyone else could do. He learned how to sing and realized he like being a bluebird.

When I asked Trevan what we learned from this story, he said, "We all have different features."

The lesson manual gave an idea to have everyone go through each family member and tell them why he/she is a great part of our family and special.
I started, and when I got to Trevan I was telling him what a nice boy he is, and how smart he is, and as I was talking, his face did the thing it does when he is trying not to cry, and is eyes were a little bit watery, even though he had a smile on his face. He was literally soaking in every word. I wanted to cry. Do I really not tell him what I think is so great about him often enough? I wanted to cry! I know I tell him I love him every day, but I also get on his case every day too. It was seriously a wake up call for me to make sure I am praising him enough everyday. I guess I think because I'm not the kind of person that really needs so much praise, that my kids might be like that too, but obviously he does need it, and I need to remember that!!!

I told Mallary how she was such a good big sister and tries to help Jonah when he is sad, and freely gives out her kisses to him. John told her that he loves to hear her laugh. I told Jonah I love that he is so happy all the time. Trevan told John that he was a good worker to make money for our family. When Mallary came to Trevan, she just kept saying, "ummm... you stepped on my back yesterday..." over and over. It was so funny. Trevan had done that the day before, and I guess Mallary wasn't over it.

The kids loved hearing what we love about them and appreciate about them!

We talked about how it was important that we didn't worry about what others think about us. How we don't have to wear the same clothes as other people (you know I had to say that because I hate the whole star wars/character shirt thing Trevan has to have), and that it's okay to be different.

Then we made some wooden spoon puppets of ourselves. You can see them HERE.

It was actually a good family home evening!!

The pictures below were after a family home evening in September.

How I Cope

When I'm feeling overwhelmed with life, frustrated, down in the dumps, etc. Instead of cleaning up a mess (which is one reason why I'm overwhelmed and frustrated), I just make a new one!!!

It's true. When I feel overwhelmed, I decide to make something new - I can't stop myself. I shut out what I'm supposed to be doing, and put my focus on a new project. (which includes cooking...)

I think, because I feel like there is so much in life that I have no control over (children's tantrums, husband not doing what I ask, scribbles on the wall - you catch my drift...), that I need to do something that I can control. To actually start something, and see it accomplished - like a craft or cooking a meal. Where I can use my brain to figure out something, other than feel like my brain might explode if a child yells my name one more time....

I mean, I could clean my room, but it just seems too overwhelming... so I'll just make something. :)

Here's my latest project that I'm SOOOO excited about!! Seriously, I'm so excited to use these!

Off to my next project... or cleaning the kitchen...

Hmmm....

Blogging Book Club

I'm pretty sure that my book club pick has been on my blog for ONE ENTIRE YEAR. That's just pure laziness on my part, because I read it almost as soon as I put it on my blog...

It was a quick, easy, good read. I don't even feel like giving a synopsis, because it was so long ago!! I know some of you have read it, so if you have any thoughts feel free to share!

I've read quite a few books since then... My current book that I just picked up today is Mockingjay, the third book in the Hunger Games series. Loved the first two, and looking forward to when I have a few seconds to read this one!!

Though I'm not reviewing this book, I did however try the recipes that were in the book, because that would be fun for a book club, right? To see the recipe results go HERE.

Happy Reading!

Jonah's Room

This picture has been taken down. (Can you believe that picture is of a 3 or 4 week old baby?) and new one's have been put in it's place.

You can see pictures of our nursery makeover HERE. Be forewarned, it's a lot of green. There were a few suggestions to add another color, but I just couldn't. (My husband suggested to add some purple! That is why I don't consult him when it comes to decorating or fashion...)

So go check out The Green Room.

A Short Story

Once upon a time. A long time ago, in a far away place, before diapers, wedding rings, and weight gain, lived a boy and a girl who used to...

DATE!!!!!

The key phrase being, USED TO.

See how I've tried to help solve this problem HERE.

Still decking the halls...

I'm running a little more behind than I ever have this Christmas season. I still have four 18 gallon tubs of decorations to put out. Guess what? They most likely will stay right where they are... Oh well.

I did, however, get Christmas tree number two decorated, and I love it. Orange and green, what's not to love?

We have had Christmas tree number three in our room, naked, for quite some time now. Earlier, I had decided I wasn't going to decorate it, then yesterday decided just to go for it. I'm so glad I did. I love it.

This tree has so many holes, it is decorated two deep. Decorations to fill the holes close to the trunk, and then decorations on the ends of the branches. I had this great beaded garland, but it wasn't enough for the whole tree. Oh well, there's always next year...

I was in Target earlier this week and I walked by the Christmas dishes, and something caught my eye. I turned around and saw this placemat that would go perfect in my room! So, I took it home and made a pillow for my bed for the holiday season! See more about it HERE.

They also had some great towels, and I bought one of those for my bathroom. It matches perfectly.

Thank you, Target, for helping deck my halls.

My poor hands

This past weekend, I had my first paying, catering job. I was in charge of doing the fruit and cheese arrangement that was also used as the centerpiece for the serving tables.

Let me tell you a few things I learned, okay maybe just one big one... When you cut fruit for SIX hours, you should wear gloves!!! My hands were raw, chapped, and burning (and swollen) from the acid of all that fruit!! It's not like you can put on lotion to help your hands until you are done - eight and a half hours later!!

It was so fun! I was telling the people throwing the anniversary party how excited I was to do it, and they just laughed because the whole thing was a bit stressful for them. But, I was excited, I love doing this stuff!

You can see pictures of my arrangement HERE.

My favorite 3 C's

So, I plan to print off my blog into a book as a sort of journal at the end of every year, and as I was reviewing it, I decided I didn't want to include all my food and party entries in it.

So, I started another blog dedicated to all such things. It's still under construction and probably will be for a long time...

So, go check it out here:

Cook! Create! Consume!

So, could I say "so" any more in one post?
(I'm sure I have)
