2010 Family Road trip Part VII

After we left Idaho, we went to visit the Wickstroms!!  It was a "Hamstrom" family reunion!

Trevan and Hazel.

I think it must be tradition for our kids to watch Shrek when the Hamstroms get together.  When Trevan was little, he'd watch it on repeat while we all played games.

This is so sad.  Somehow, we don't know when, but Jonah got a sunburn on his face while I was visiting with my friend Jen, and we were all sitting outside (though we thought we had him in the shade...) or he got it in the car, because we forgot to put his shade down on his carseat, and the drive back from Idaho, he had the sun on his side of the van the entire time.  It was so sad!! I felt like such a bad mom!!

Chris and Jonah - so cute!

My kids love auntie Becky and uncle Chris!

On a trip to Japan earlier that year, Chris had bought John a souvenir of baby squid I think.  Well, John packed them and brought them to Chris and Becky's house so they could try them together.  It is too funny to look at Chris and John trying these in the next pictures.

Look at them, both ready to vomit!

I love the next few pictures...

They went to the trash can to spit them out.  I love the picture below because it shows how John laughs, he throws his head back and puts his hand on his chest.

Trevan is grossed out too, and he didn't even try it!

And of course we took a "Hamstrom Family" photo!  Which now we need to update with another dog, Jasper, and the twins, Scarlett and Asher!!!!!

We loved visiting with Chris and Becky!  We loved it so much we did a crazy thing - we stayed an extra day forcing us to drive straight home - 36 hours, stopping only for gas, potty breaks, and food.  Let's just say, we learned our lesson and will never do it again.

Although our kids were really great on the drive home, and crazy good troopers about sleeping in their car seats two nights, we had too many close calls.  For example, It's the middle of the night, and all of a sudden John says, "I can't see!!!"  I totally freaked out, and was like, "What do you mean you can't see???!!!!!"  He responded, "My eyes are open, but I can't see anything!"  I told him kind of frantically to pull over, and I drove.

Another time, we were driving through mountains, in the middle of the night I was driving, and I slammed into a wall of fog.  The fog was so thick, I couldn't see anything, but I knew there was a huge drop just to my right!  I woke John up, so he could freak out with me, or keep me calm.  Plus, since we hadn't had our van very long, I didn't know if we had fog lights, so I was experimenting with the lights, and kept turning them off, and that freaked me out as well.  Needless to say, I was doing a lot of praying, and thank goodness it didn't last very long.

In case you didn't know, the trick to staying awake on long haul trips is beef jerky, and sunflower seeds (the kind you have to shell).  Although early in the morning when I was driving the last stretch literally getting off at our exit, the beef jerky, and sunflower seeds had started to lose their effectiveness, and I was so bloated from all that salt!

We loved our road trip, and visiting our family, and our friends!!!!!!!!  We hope to do it again soon...

But, we'll be stopping at hotels this time, no more overnight drives for us!
