I came home from the library yesterday with some chapter books for Trevan. This was going to be the first time for me checking any of those out from the library for him, and I got a variety that I thought would be fun.
I showed him the books I picked out, and had him pick out one to take to bed with him. He didn't seem very excited...
A few seconds later, he came back in the kitchen and asked, "Why did you get such weird books for me?"
"I'm sorry Trevan, I thought I got fun books for you."
"Yeah, but these are fantasy, and I like non fiction."
Oh. My bad.
I went back to the library bag and pulled out some National Geographic books I got for him too, but was going to save for later.
He grinned like a madman, put the "fantasy" book down, and excitedly grabbed at the books about tornadoes, elephants, and animal travels.
I didn't know seven year olds were so picky about their literature. I also didn't know seven year olds used the words, 'fantasy' and 'non fiction' to describe the books they read...
I'm so out of touch.

We couldn't get Andrew to read anything (at all...) and we finally discovered he liked only non-fiction books, his reading level nearly doubled over the summer :) He will not read a little fantasy but it has to have historical or scientific elements :)
