Maybe he is my child

Today was "island attire" day at Trevan's elementary school. What's funny about that, is that I thought it was on Thursday (yesterday), and sent Trevan to school in his Hawaii shirt, and a shell lei. (Note: that read Hawaii and not HawaiiAN shirt. Can you believe my son doesn't have a Hawaiian shirt??? He had like twenty the first summer he was alive!) Anyway, what's even funnier is that I volunteer in his class on Thursdays, and I thought I would be a "cool" mom and dress in my island attire. So, I donned my Hawaiian shirt, and pineapple charm bracelet, only to walk into his classroom to find no one wearing anything that resembled "island attire." Almost immediately, some of Trevan's class members informed me that "island attire day is tomorrow!" So much for me being "cool." I made a few jokes about it with his teacher, but kept my coat on. I was just glad I didn't wear one of my muu muus...

So, this morning, Trevan tried to wear his Hawaii shirt to school again. Sorry, Charlie. He really had no other "island attire." (Though now, I realized he could have worn his swim trunks over jeans or something.) I was pretty sure he wouldn't want to wear a grass skirt or a coconut bra that I did have, but I had another idea, though sure it wouldn't work...

"Trevan, you could wear this blue shirt. The ocean is blue, and an island is surrounded by the ocean..."

He shook his head, "I don't think so."

I thought I would give it a go, "I'm pretty sure that no one else will have thought of this, and you'll be the only one in a blue shirt that stands for the ocean. Pretty cool, huh?"

I was very sure that was a fail comment (you know, because of this), but he processed it quickly, and shook his head up in down in excitement. I was proud of my little boy in the blue shirt.

When we walked in the door from school today, I asked him, "What did everyone think of your blue shirt?"

He said that two of the girls at his table, said that he wasn't really wearing 'island wear.'

Obviously, they have never been to an island, or seen the ocean....

Note to self: Buy Trevan a Hawaiian shirt

I wouldn't have let Sophie wear the same shirt twice in row either back in k-garten. But now, yeah, I would. In fact, I probably wouldn't even notice. Kate wears her same favorite dresses 2-3 times a week. My standards have slipped quite a bit . . . . and I don't even care.

Well, if it were obviously dirty, I wouldn't. But otherwise, yeah.

Marina wore her cardigan to church this morning upside and inside out. With a ratty old scarf (my first knitting attempt) around her neck. At least she took them off by the end of sacrament.

Last year Sophie came home from school in the dead of winter with old Crocs on her feet! (That was Jeryl's fault - I was still in the shower when he walked her over.) I was so horrified that I emailed the teacher to let her know that I had not approved that. Just so you know I have some standards!
