Caroling and Fruit cake- A New Christmas Tradition

During breakfast yesterday morning, my husband informed me that there was a Christmas tradition his family did that he wished we were doing.

SIDE STORY: If you haven't had the pleasure of hearing me discuss this next issue, here you go. I think that when a couple gets married the man should take on the woman's last name. In a family, it is usually the woman that decides traditions, and the customs that carry on into her own family - things that she did in her family. It's not always the case, but it seems like the woman decides more of what goes on when it comes to traditions and such in her family. People always want to have a son to carry on the family name, but really, they are mostly just carrying on the name of the father, but more so carrying on the traditions of his mother. I know a lot of women that do not support or allow some of the traditions of their husbands even though it wouldn't be a big deal to do so, therefore their children are only carrying on the traditions of the mother's family. So, now you have heard my very brief synopsis of my last name theory.

However, even though I think this, I consider myself to be a very good wife in these situations. I've tried really hard to incorporate my husbands traditions, or things he'd like to do that his family did. I think it's important that my children learn about and carry on traditions from both sides of our family, along with the new traditions we create together.

So, back to yesterday - John told me that at Christmastime his family made banana bread and fruit cake and went caroling, and he'd like for us to do that too.

"Really?" I asked. "You want to take our little family and go caroling? I think I'd be embarrassed, and I'm not a big fan of fruit cake." (We caroled in our family, but it wasn't a regular holiday tradition, and we were older, and there were more of us than just two adults and two little children that won't even be singing...)

"You could find a good recipe." John added.

But, in my efforts to be a good wife and carry on both sets of traditions I agreed - but, I'm hoping to carry on this tradition with a little twist.

My local friends - Who's interested in a caroling party? (call me, email me, facebook me) I'll make yummy goodies for us to eat (you know I will), and we can all make goodies to take to whomever we decide to go caroling to. It would be fun, right?

But, don't worry...

I won't be making fruit cake.

Happy Caroling!
