Trevan's Reading Revelation

Trevan  9/26/2010

This is an unpublished post from February 25, 2011

Trevan will not read a book to me. He won't. I have to force him to do any required reading that he needs to do. But, I know he can read more than he's showing. I don't get it.

Last week, he sat down and read Dr. Seuss's, Foot Book, all by himself. "See?" I told him, "You could probably sit down and read whatever book you want to?" He tried to hide his grin.

Last night, he read an entire book to me, a "long" one with more than one sentance per page. It was the book Runaway Mummy. Of course, I had to help him with words like, 'humongous, and cathedral,' but he did the others on his own! You could tell he was proud of himself.

This morning, we got up early enough that the kids could play a little bit in their rooms before eating breakfast. I looked over at Trevan, and I could tell he was reading a book to himself.

"Trevan, isn't it fun that you can read books to yourself now?"

He immediately hid his face, and said, "I wasn't reading."

"Honey, I could tell you were reading. Why would you want to hide that? Why don't you like showing people that you can read?"

"I don't know. I get stage fright I guess," he shrugged.

"That's silly, why do you get stage fright?"

"Sometimes I don't know the words."

"Well, if you don't know the words, someone will tell you what it is.  That's no big deal, that's how we learn to read."

From that point on, he picked up books and read them himself.  I guess he was worried that he didn't know ALL the words, so he didn't want to be embarrassed or something?  That silly boy!
