Christmas Ornament Tradition

I often got a Christmas ornament in my stocking when I was a teenager. So, when I got married I had those ornaments combined with other ornaments I got as a child, and had enough to start decorating our own Christmas tree.

To add to our collection, when John and I got married, we started a tradition of giving each other an ornament for Christmas. Our second Christmas together, we decided to give each other an ornament to unwrap when we decorated the Christmas tree.

We don't give each other ornaments any more. The last year we did that was Trevan's second Christmas. Instead, we just pick out ornaments whenever we travel or go on vacation as our souvennier to put on our Christmas tree. Someday, I'll have our very own travel Christmas tree. We don't quite have enough for one yet. Sometimes, when we go somewhere we forget, or we can't find an ornament.

When we started having kids, we gave them ornaments every year to open up the night we put up our Christmas tree (well, when they were babies we just laid the ornament on their chest and took a picture). So, one day, when they grow up and leave home, they will have a nice collection of Christmas ornaments to decorate their own tree with. We try to pick an ornament that represents something about our kids for that year.

This year, it was hard figuring out what ornament to get Trevan. I finally decided on a Bumblebee Transformer ornament because he really just started getting into those this year, and he asked for Santa to bring him a large Bumblebee Transformer for Christmas.

I knew exactly what ornament I wanted Mallary to have, but I couldn't find one. I wanted to get her a blue bear holding a white blanket - her most prized possessions. I was going to make one, but I couldn't find a small enough stuffed animal blue bear. This past weekend, I found a blue bear and decided it would have to make do.

Their new ornaments will always be the first ornaments to be hung.

I love this tradition, and the fact that they will have a memory item from every year of their life hanging on their Christmas trees.

I love this tradition and we do it as well. However, I fear that by the time they are out of the house, all their ornaments will be broken! Everyday they bring me another ornament that they've broken because they won't leave the darn tree alone!!!!

I know! Mallary has had a few time outs. She hasn't taken any ornaments off the tree today though... Hopefully it will stay that way...
