GET IT/GET REAL

Okay, so I got my new Pottery Barn catalog today, and I enjoy perusing it as much as the next person; even the pumpkin decor on the back cover got me a little excited for fall, I could almost smell the cool, crisp, autumn air... however, sometimes while turning the pages the voice in my head is like, "get real." That voice in my head has decided to become vocal and be heard as the voice on my blog in my new GET IT/GET REAL series.

From the viewpoint of a mother with small children some of the staging they do is pretty ridiculous, and I think some people feel their homes need to look like this, and honestly it would be nice if mine did, but it is so unrealistic with small children living in your home. I mean, you can teach your children to leave certain things alone in your house, but they are only capable of so much! Now, don't get me wrong I love me some Barn items, and I bring those to you in my GET IT sections, and keep in mind I bring the GET REAL section to you from a mother of two young children's viewpoint...

GET REAL!
Seriously? This is gorgeous, but can you even imagine Mallary walking by this everyday and not touching it? It's just laughable. Not to mention the flies, bugs, and dust that will land on your dishes...

GET IT!

You know I'm a sucker for anything that has an orange and green color scheme, right?

GET REAL!

This picture almost gives me an anxiety attack. So many things that can be harmed... Let's see, first off that horsey would be ridden off in the sunset, the baskets would be next to get dumped, and the only safe shelves would be the top two. Whatever is in that bag would be dumped and spread all over the floor, and my daughter would be standing on top of that bench pulling the pictures she could off of the walls. She still can't leave the pictures alone that are hanging over the changing table. She loves to watch those suckers spin!

GET IT!

I have been wanting some of these! I LOVE THEM! Can't you imagine snuggling up to these next to a fireplace. But, guess what? Don't buy them! Buy some old sweaters at some thrift stores and make some!!! Hollah! Save a Dollah! (Or in more hillbilly terms, "Holler! Save a Doller!") (Sorry, I might be getting a little carried away...)

GET REAL!

Okay, we see this a lot; decorated ottomans. Seriously? My kids can't even keep the throw pillows on the couch, do you think those nuts will stay in those jars? And those pretty, little books? The future of those babies at my house would hold tearing and lots of cave-man like, crayon scribbles. You will find no ottomans staged with goodies at my house. No sir-ee Bob. No sir-ee Betty. No sir-ee everybody.

GET REAL!

Same goes for well decorated shelves. I spent most of Trevans second year of life putting books back in a shelf, no matter how tightly I put those babies in, those little muscles in his fingers worked over time to pry those books out of the shelf. Hence, why we have no bookshelf that goes to the floor in the main living areas anymore. We got one of those handy dandy faux apothecaries. It took Trevan ages to figure out which handle opened those doors! Mallary hasn't got it figured out yet, thank goodness!

GET REAL!

The party planner in me was like, "WHAT???" when I looked through the catalog today. Here Pottery Barn is advertising a party planner tipster thing on their website, but they are breaking one of the main rules in party planning on the advertisement; centerpiece height. Come on, people! Eye level and under; 12 inches and under, or if using balloons; higher than 30 inches.

I mean, sure, this looks gorgeous, but seriously? Do the people that you are planning to sit opposite of each other, not like each other? Is this someones way of keeping conversation to a minimum? Because, it will work. Grandiose is great, and sure makes a statement, but this is ridiculous.

Okay, not quite as bad as the ones before but still it is annoying to have to look around something when you are talking to someone across the table. Bigger is not always better!

GET IT!
Much better, and still gorgeous even though it's not 3 feet tall.

GET IT!
The party planner part of me's mouth watered at the sight of this bowl they are using as a punch bowl. Not for sale, I think, but I must go get one like it ASAP!

I am also a sucker for a great place card holder. This is a fun one, though I'm not big on heart shapes, and this one kind of looks like a heart. I'm sorry, I'm just not a heartsy fartsy person, but this is still cute.

Anyway, have fun perusing your new Pottery Barn catalog. I did! :)

This post is great, however I actually have that exact leather ottoman in my family room! I try to keep it simply decorated though with a tray that holds magazines and the remote controls and that's it. And even those magazines get torn up from time to time. So it's true what you say...but I just love the look!

I don't even have kids and most of these are a "get real!" for me. My dogs wagging tails would clean off any shelf/table/ottoman in 15 seconds. :)
I like this feature. Very entertaining!

Mindy that's funny, it is a totally great look, but yeah, I have to keep the remote controls put away too, Mallary loves those things, and if she gets one it is like a search for the national treasure to ever find it again. :)
